The Dolce & Gabbana Center for Artisan Craftsmanship

The Dolce & Gabbana Center for Artisan Craftsmanship "Botteghe di Mestiere" project is intricately dedicated to cultivating the forthcoming cohort of accomplished master tailors, concurrently exalting the artistry and preeminence synonymous with the realm of Italian craftsmanship encapsulated by the label Made in Italy.

“We aspire to see these virtuous circles between artisanal know-how and contemporary creativity, between education and job opportunities, flourish wherever they may arise. In the world of fashion, we must all strive to safeguard the extensive and invaluable heritage of handmade craftsmanship, which is uniquely abundant in Italy.” - Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana

The profound affection Dolce & Gabbana holds for Italy transcends all boundaries. Since their inception, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have displayed an unwavering commitment to the preservation of time-honored tailoring traditions, while wholeheartedly embracing the cultural opulence and values that define Italy. Their enduring dedication extends to the venerable practice of meticulous handmade craftsmanship. Their realm is an exquisite tapestry woven from the threads of heritage, artisanal virtuosity, cultural legacy, and the vibrant essence of the Mediterranean.

It is within the crucible of this fervor that the laudable Botteghe di Mestiere project emerged, taking root in 2012 at the brand's Legnano headquarters. This visionary undertaking is underpinned by a resolute mission: to venerate the exalted realm of Italian craftsmanship and, in so doing, to bestow the indispensable skills of sartorial artistry upon the forthcoming generation.

A deep reverence for artisan craftsmanship

Rooted in Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s steadfast dedication to the refinement of intricate craftsmanship and the preservation of artisanal aptitude, the inception of Botteghe di Mestiere came to fruition. Originating in 2012 within the confines of Legnano, this visionary enterprise has since extended its reach, encompassing locales in Vaprio D’Adda, Sarmeola di Rubano, and Lonate Pozzolo.

Harnessing the nostalgia of their formative years, notably encapsulated by Domenico Dolce’s early apprenticeship in “La Bottega,” these workshops stand as sanctuaries for burgeoning craftsmen. The principal aim underlying Botteghe di Mestiere is the bequeathal of time-honored tailoring traditions—encompassing the intricacies of pattern-making, embroidery techniques, precise tailoring, and fastidious pressing—to the aspiring generations.

Within this evocative odyssey, the essence of Italian beauty assumes a central role. From the picturesque vistas of Portofino and the captivating charm of Capri to the resplendent grandeur of Rome and the alluring mystique of Sicilian black lace and majolica ceramics, these workshops serve as conduits to the opulent heritage and cultural treasures that epitomize Italy.

“The fitting. The basting stitch. The interlining. Needle and thread. The cutting. Tailoring is an ancient craft. Crafted by hand. Touching, sewing, cutting. Most importantly, listening and observing. It’s the only way to learn.”  - Domenico Dolce

Tailoring stands as an age-old art, steeped in the richness of time-honored tradition.

The Dolce & Gabbana art of tailoring is an ancient craft deeply immersed in the tapestry of tradition.

Within the confines of Botteghe di Mestiere, an unyielding principle prevails: the mentors must comprise dedicated members of the Dolce & Gabbana center, ensuring that the mantle of instruction remains firmly in the hands of adept artisans nestled within the tailoring workshops. At each establishment, a 'master tailor' is appointed, a paragon of passion who imparts the intricacies of advanced tailoring techniques, thereby safeguarding the art of cutting, embroidery, and pressing for posterity, as it is passed onto aspiring individuals keen to uphold this cherished tradition.

Upon the culmination of their tutelage, approximately 60% of the students embark upon a gratifying journey within the company's folds. This symbiotic synergy facilitates the nurturing of a cadre of adept embroidery and sewing professionals while facilitating the seamless transmission of work methodologies and revered customs. The bedrock principles underpinning this educational endeavor rest upon the nurturing of emerging generations, the propagation of Made in Italy excellence, and the fostering of a constructive influence on the communities we are privileged to serve.
The Dolce & Gabbana center for artisan craftsmanship is truly a home for the individuals that thrive into creating something beautiful.

“Training young individuals means providing them with opportunities, and we have always believed in the potential of young individuals. We believe in their abilities, knowing that they only need to learn and demonstrate their worth.” - Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana

The Process of Selecting for Botteghe di Mestiere

The process of selection for admission into Botteghe di Mestiere, and the pursuit of the venerable art of tailoring, encompasses two distinct pathways. Initially, a proactive approach involves the identification of promising talent from esteemed fashion institutions such as ACOF Olga Fiorini, AFOL Moda, Istituto Burgo, Istituto Marangoni, Polimoda, IED Istituto Europeo di Design, and Koefia. Alternatively, aspiring individuals have the option to directly submit their applications through the official Dolce&Gabbana website.

The focal point of this selection is the cultivation of junior profiles, with specific attention directed towards candidates aged between 20 and 27, who have already completed their formal education in the realm of fashion. This prerequisite ensures a robust foundation, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive training experience. Through active participation in this educational odyssey, participants are afforded a distinctive opportunity to both preserve and celebrate an ancient craft, actively contributing to the perpetuation of Italy’s opulent legacy of exquisite handmade craftsmanship.

“If you have a passion for your craft, being a tailor becomes a labour of love – it’s a profession that thrives, contrary to popular belief. It’s not just about the time it takes to create a jacket; it’s about the deep appreciation for your work and the sense of pride that comes from crafting something with your own hands.” - Domenico Dolce
